Brexit news: UK and EU still at loggerheads a year on

Six years after the referendum, the economic case for Brexit is proving increasingly difficult to make

The EU has warned the incoming British prime minister that any unilateral action to scrap part of the Brexit deal is legally and politically off the table

A year after the UK formally left the European Union, the two sides remain at loggerheads over the Northern Ireland protocol, which was negotiated by former Brexit secretary David Frost and former prime minister Boris Johnson and hailed as a "good way to" avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The protocol has been a source of tension between the UK and the EU since it was implemented in January 2021, with the UK government arguing that it is causing economic and political problems in Northern Ireland. The EU has said that it is willing to discuss changes to the protocol, but that it will not renegotiate the entire agreement.

The stalemate over the protocol has led to increased uncertainty for businesses and individuals in Northern Ireland, and has also raised questions about the future of the UK's relationship with the EU.

In a speech on Friday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned the incoming British prime minister, likely to be Liz Truss, that any unilateral action to scrap part of the Brexit deal is legally and politically off the table.

Von der Leyen said that the EU is "ready to work constructively" with the UK to find solutions to the problems caused by the protocol, but that it will not renegotiate the deal.

The UK government has said that it is "disappointed" by the EU's stance, but that it remains committed to finding a solution to the problems caused by the protocol.
